Soil Microbial Responses to Aflatoxin Exposure: Consequences for Biomass, Activity and Catabolic Functionality
نویسندگان
چکیده
Aflatoxins (AFs) are fungal secondary metabolites frequently detected in soil that exhibit vitro toxicity to certain microorganisms. However, microbial responses at different levels and complex systems such as the environment have not been systematically studied. Therefore, we investigated multiple two soils (sandy loam clay) aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) environmentally relevant concentrations (0.5–500 µg kg−1) during a 28-day incubation. General parameters for biomass (microbial carbon ergosterol), activity (glucose-induced basal respiration), catabolic functionality (substrate utilization patterns) were assessed. We observed minor transient effects both soils. In sandy loam, found negative on with increased metabolic quotient, while clay exhibited stimulation same parameters, suggesting hormetic effect due reduced bioavailability through sorption onto minerals. Our results indicate AFB1 does pose threat general indicators under test conditions without previous AF contamination. Given toxic potential of AFs specific microorganisms, further studies should investigate higher taxonomic functional natural environments aflatoxigenic fungi, tropical soils, including additional physicochemical stressors.

Soil Microbial Biomass Determination
Basic Idea: The quantity of microbial biomass in a given soil sample is inherently difficult to measure. To some degree, any measurement of microbial biomass is relative – different methodologies or variations in methodologies will yield microbial biomass estimates that are not directly comparable. For this reason, if you want to measure microbial biomass – choose a method and stick with it exa...
متن کاملHeavy metal Impact on Soil Microbial Biomass , Soil dehydrogenase activity and Soil Respiration rate
The contamination of agricultural soils by heavy metals is a global problem. Soil texture as a biotic factor represents one of the most important factors that influences the distribution of organic matter and ultimately play decisive role in retention of heavy metals in soil ecosystem. The effects of heavy metals on soil microbial processes were investigated. Analytical grade sulphate and chlor...
متن کاملEffects of sulfonamide and tetracycline antibiotics on soil microbial activity and microbial biomass.
Increasingly often soil residual concentrations of pharmaceutical antibiotics are detected, while their ecotoxic relevance is scarcely known. Thus, dose related effects of two antibiotics, sulfapyridine and oxytetracycline, on microorganisms of two different topsoils were investigated. The fumigation-extracted microbial C (E(C)) and ergosterol were determined to indicate soil microbial and fung...
متن کاملA meta-analysis of soil microbial biomass responses to forest disturbances
Climate warming is likely to increase the frequency and severity of forest disturbances, with uncertain consequences for soil microbial communities and their contribution to ecosystem C dynamics. To address this uncertainty, we conducted a meta-analysis of 139 published soil microbial responses to forest disturbances. These disturbances included abiotic (fire, harvesting, storm) and biotic (ins...
متن کاملAnnual Removal of Aboveground Plant Biomass Alters Soil Microbial Responses to Warming
Clipping (i.e., harvesting aboveground plant biomass) is common in agriculture and for bioenergy production. However, microbial responses to clipping in the context of climate warming are poorly understood. We investigated the interactive effects of grassland warming and clipping on soil properties and plant and microbial communities, in particular, on microbial functional genes. Clipping alone...
